The Battlefield Restoration Grant Program, administered by the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP), supports the preservation and restoration of landscapes that witnessed pivotal conflicts in U.S. history, including the American Revolution, Civil War, and War of 1812. These grants promote the community-driven restoration of historic battlefields located outside the boundaries of National Park Service units and protected under the NPS Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant Program.
Purpose and Use:
Funding assists with planning and implementation projects that restore “day-of-battle” conditions consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Landscapes. Projects may include landscape rehabilitation, feature reconstruction (with documentation), and resource management plans.
Two types of grants are available:
- Scoping Grants: $30,000 – $100,000 for early-stage planning, research, consultation, and design (1–2 years).
- Implementation Grants: $50,000 – $750,000 for construction or restoration activities based on approved plans (2–5 years).
Eligibility:
Eligible applicants include:
- State, county, city, or township governments
- Federally recognized and non-federally recognized tribal organizations
- Public and private institutions of higher education
- Nonprofit organizations (with or without 501(c)(3) status)
Eligible properties must:
- Be located outside the boundaries of a National Park System unit, and
- Have been protected through an NPS Battlefield Land Acquisition Grant or be owned by a state, local government, or qualified nonprofit, and
- Fall within the designated boundaries of battlefields identified in the NPS Survey Reports.
Additional Notes:
- Multiple applications from a single applicant are allowed but only one award per property per cycle.
- Projects supporting America’s 250th anniversary (“America250”) are encouraged.
- Land developed with these funds must carry perpetual preservation easements to the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) or another approved organization.
Geographic scope: National — projects may occur in any U.S. state with eligible battlefield properties.
