At Smart Grant Solutions, we take pride in collaborating with organizations that are deeply committed to Pennsylvania’s Natural Legacy. One such partner is ClearWater Conservancy, a nationally accredited land trust based in State College, Pennsylvania. Since its establishment in 1980, ClearWater has been instrumental in conserving over 11,000 acres of land and restoring more than 25 miles of streams, ensuring the preservation of central Pennsylvania’s natural beauty for future generations.

Pennsylvania’s Natural Legacy: Elizabeth Crisfield

In May 2024, ClearWater welcomed Elizabeth Crisfield as its new Executive Director. With over two decades of experience in conservation science, Elizabeth brings a wealth of knowledge and a fresh perspective to the organization. Her background includes roles as a hydrologist and water rights negotiator for the Everglades National Park and as the founder of the Strategic Stewardship Initiative, where she consulted with state agencies on conservation strategies for at-risk species. Elizabeth’s academic credentials are equally impressive, holding a bachelor’s degree in physics, a master’s in agronomy, and a doctorate in geography from Penn State, where her research focused on climate adaptation in the Appalachian region. Under Elizabeth’s leadership, ClearWater is embarking on an ambitious project to transform a 10-acre farm in Houserville into a Community Conservation Center. This center aims to serve as a hub for environmental education and community engagement, featuring direct access to Spring Creek, allowing visitors to experience firsthand the importance of streamside ecosystems. You can learn more about this amazing initiative in their Campaign to Connect booklet and see how you can Connect, Protect, Steward, and Restore the local landscapes and waterways in central Pennsylvania. Engaging the Community

ClearWater’s commitment to community involvement is exemplified by its Centred Outdoors program, which offers free, guided outdoor experiences to encourage people of all ages to explore and appreciate the natural landscapes of Centre County. Additionally, initiatives like the Riparian Conservation Program focus on restoring streamside habitats, enhancing water quality, and supporting biodiversity.

A Partnership Rooted in Shared Values

At Smart Grant Solutions, we are inspired by ClearWater Conservancy’s holistic approach to conservation, blending scientific expertise with community-driven initiatives. Their work not only protects vital ecosystems but also fosters a deeper connection between people and the natural world.

We are honored to support their mission through more effective financial grant management and compliance and look forward to witnessing the continued positive impact of their efforts under Elizabeth’s guidance. Together, we can ensure that central Pennsylvania’s natural treasures are preserved and cherished for generations to come.
